A quick e-mail to let you know that our Spanish and the Sea Holidays have now been generously baptised in Txakoli ( the local white wine)! . Chris and David were here in April, having driven up from their home on the Costa Blanca in search of someone who actually spoke Spanish! And Hilary and Priscilla brought in the month of May, with sunshine, seafood and the subjunctive, tapas and (for fear of being repetitive) more Txakoli!
As many know our Spanish language house parties in the Baztan valley are my passion and my incessant repetition of ‘Qué bonito! Qué bonito’! each time we take to the hills; the wild horses in dappled sunlight, the crumbling white farmsteads by mountain streams … is far more likely to go down in history than my perfect rendition of ‘ser’ and ‘estar’. (Luckily, Delfina and Danielle are the ‘real’ teachers.) Nevertheless, the mediaeval fishing village of Getaria, its turqoise sea and verdant hillsides laced with vineyards was stunning. This is a great new venue for our tailor-made Spanish courses and, as a proud parent, I can honestly say, a worthy new ‘in-law’ for our beloved Spanish & Walking Holidays in the Baztan.
For those who want to try out their Spanish there is a letter from Delfina below (you will undoubtedly pick up the word Txakoli if nothing else!). In the meantime I leave you with a reminder of this year’s dates and prices – there are still the odd places left on our Spanish & Walking Holidays and Walking House parties in the Baztan.

Hemos estrenado ya nuestro primer curso en Getaria en este mes de Abril y los primeros clientes han sido David y Chris Grant, una pareja encantadora, cálida, parlanchina y abierta a conocer esta espléndida zona. A la semana siguiente vinieron Hilary y su prima Priscila, mujeres de armas tomar, que con su divertido espíritu han dejado un buen recuerdo en Getaria.
Dice un refrán español: “Abril, aguas mil”. Sin embargo, no ha sido así. El tiempo revuelto de primavera donde no ha faltado la lluvia, el sol, el viento, los arcos iris, etc nos han acompañado estos días disfrutando de la compañía de David y Chris. Los días que estuvieron Hilary y Priscilla fueron más calurosos y soleados por lo que nuestras chicas pudieron disfrutar del pescado fresco y el buen vino en las terrazas del pueblo.
Me gusta mucho mi tierra y en estos días primaverales nos ofrece un regalo para nuestros sentidos, con un estallido de intensos colores: el verde de los montes, el azul del mar, las tonalidades rubias de sus playas.
Os aconsejo traer el traje de baño, además de las botas de monte (o un buen calzado para caminar), por si os animáis a daros un refrescante baño en el mar. ¿Quién se atreve?
No se os olvide vuestro pequeño diccionario y vuestras muchas historias que contar, porque vais a tener que hablar mucho castellano.
Os espero con un vaso de txakolí, con una sonrisa y con muchas ganas de compartirlo con tod@s vosotr@s.
